Description | "Hit" and "hits" replaced with "clubs", "slashes", "whacks", "stabs" etc. |
Changes to creature attacks:
* Creatures with beaks (ravens, tengu, vrocks) now "peck" rather than "bite". * Monsters can now "kick" each other (formerly their kicking attack simply "hit"). If you or a creature has a bare-handed attack: * Creatures with claws or foreclaws now "claw you". * Water elementals, fire elementals and krakens now "lash you", and earth elementals now "pummel you". * Undead now "scratch" (different to "claw" as they don't have claws.) * Monks and samurai (including quest monsters) now "strike". * Everything else "punches". If you or a creature has a weapon attack: * Blunt weapons now "whack", except for clubs, maces and morning stars, which "club". * Piercing weapons now "jab you", except for blades, which "stab". * Slashing weapons either "hack you", "hew you" (if it's an axe), or "slash" (if it isn't). (Barbarians still "smite" instead of these.) * Whips now "whip you". * Everything else (i.e worm teeth) will just "hit". CAVEATS: * Nurse attacks now read like this: "The nurse punches! (I hope you don't mind.)" Is this reasonable? * It assumes that there will never be a polearm that both slashes and whacks (if there was, it would always "whack" and never "slash").

Please disregard my last post. Seems this patch isn't 100% compatible with save files made before the patch was applied. Started a new game, everything is behaving as it should be.[Quote]

Really like this patch. Just applied it a few days ago and did notice a small bug. The artifacts Magicbane and Sunsword give 'whack' attack messages instead of the 'stab/slash' messages you would expect for their weapon type. Several other artifacts give the correct attack message, as do normal weapons of the same type.[Quote]

I've changed all the URLs for L's patches to point to the correct place now.[Quote]

How about "The nurse jabs you"? That implies that she is giving an injection.[Quote]

What about for her regular hit message? She has a separate hit message for her healing 'attack', you know, which is why we can have this discussion. That's handled by the special attack routine. But if she does damage, it goes to the ordinary attack routine and (with this patch) calls barehitmsg(), which results in 'punches'. So either she would both 'hit' and 'punch', or else you'd have to put a special case in barehitmsg() - which would be highly ironic since you're wanting to use the generic hit message here.
Of course, I still think 'touch' is best for the healing message, but that's just me.[Quote]

I think it should just be "The nurse hits". Sounds good enough compared to "The nurse punches/touches/slaps/etc".[Quote]

The problem with "The nurse heals you" is that it can still have a miss message. "The nurse heals you! The nurse heals you! The nurse misses. The nurse heals you! The nurse just misses!" It sounds kind of strange to juxtapose them that way, don't you think?[Quote]

I think the nurse should "heal you".[Quote]

Maybe it should say the nurse "touches you"?
Or does that have too many dirty connotations?[Quote] |
