Katamari

DescriptionAdds a new ball type; things will stick to it when you roll it around.
Adds a new item in the "Balls" category (currently called "Iron Balls", as these are the only items in it in vanilla).

UnIDed appearance is "studded rubbery ball", IDed is "katamari ball"; Japanese name is "katamari".

You can push it like a boulder, and items which are light enough (compared to its current weight) will stick to it. Unlike a boulder, you can *always* "squeeze onto" its square (albeit without the message).

#loot or apply the ball to add/remove items from it.

The katamari can be thrown or kicked (if light enough) to cause damage to monsters; the amount of damage scales with weight. If it strikes a wall or obstacle (not a monster, currently) mid-flight, items may fall off; the same goes if you unsuccessfully kick it. (SIDE-EFFECT: any container will now suffer impact damage if thrown/kicked into a wall or obstacle) Fragile items attached to a katamari aren't protected from striking/force bolt. Items (including any corpse) dropped by a monster killed by a thrown/kicked katamari may become stuck to it.

Katamari are not generated anywhere in this patch (although an upgrade including a Sokoban replacement has been suggested!); you can wish for one or polymorph an iron ball.

I like the idea. I think it's fun, and a bit funny. But there there are some things about it that still need some work. Here are a few things that come to mind:
- If you drop the ball on top of an item, it doesn't pick it up. You have to roll it on from another square, and I found this unintuitive.
- If an object gets knocked off the ball, the knocked off object's glyph gets drawn on the tile rather than the ball's glyph. This can make it confusing when you try to pick up a pancake or something and get told that you can't move there (because there's a monster behind the ball). The ball should be drawn with higher priority, like boulders are.
- Monsters can apparently walk past the ball without pushing it, but the player can't.
- Some of the messages for the ball seem a bit off. When it is small, you push it "with little effort". I think it should not even mention effort until it is a bit bigger. Also, I think it gets to the really heavy names a bit too soon.[Quote]

The bug with the Amulet and the Invocifacts will be fixed presently, thanks goffrie. I'm not sure about Kaenneth's question, but currently let's just say that the character manages to avoid touching that part of the ball when rolling it! :-)

(ps: currently we have some DNS troubles on greyfire.org, you can get the patch through here until I get that sorted finally: http://69.25.196.251/NetHack/katamari.diff )[Quote]

While it isn't possible to attach the Amulet of Yendor (and presumably the Bell, Candelabrum and Book) to a katamari ball with 'a' or #loot, you can stick it on by rolling the ball on it. Furthermore, pushing the ball into water will cause the Amulet to disappear (digging does not dig it up.)

However, otherwise, it is very cool and a good idea :)[Quote]

Great idea! I'm curious though, what about a Cocktrice corpse attached to the ball, and other 'touch' effects?[Quote]

A patch worthy of the official release if I ever saw one.

Also, as you mentioned, a katamari-type replacement for sokoban would be a pretty cool idea. There's stuff all over the level, which you can't pick up, and you need to get the katamari to a designated size within X moves to advance to the next floor.[Quote]
