Description | Confirm attack on floating eyes |
The behaviour of nethack with respect to floating eyes has long been contended. Although the Dev Team officially considers it intentional, it has been argued that the lack of a warning is not entirely fair and constitutes a discriminatory practice against hackers of varying digital proportions (crudely termed "fat-fingered").
Therefore, here is a patch that gives the player an opportunity to confirm attacks on floating eyes.

lol OR you could save and back up your save in a zip file if you REALLY want more than one shot. btw I like this patch but I'm not going to use it, nor paranoid lava and water either. All the paranoid things are worthwhile but I prefer to pay a bit more attention.[Quote]

Instant death because you're not OCD enough to check whether a floating eye appeared after each turn? Really, vanilla NetHack devteam???
Anyway, 5 of course. To clarify the above: the existence of floating eyes means that you may never simply walk through a dark corridor in vanilla unless you have reflection/free action. And if you do, you have to pause after every single step and see whether there is a floating eye. I frankly don't have time for that. Thanks for this patch![Quote]

What at first seemed to me an insignificant little patch (perhaps even unfairly game unbalancing) has become a "must have" in my version of the game. Having played with it for only a short while, I've come to decide it's one of the best I've seen in a long time; truly in the full spirit of command line nethack.[Quote]

Haha people still don't get it.[Quote]

Well the patch works as advertised but it goes against the spirit of the game, it really is unnecessary and promotes lazy NetHacking.[Quote]

Dying by carelessness is part and parcel of nethack.
Put a "warn from floating eye" option in config, or enable the message only if the player has the warning attribute (would make the warning attribute a bit more useful).[Quote]

I'm like Arthur Dent except I smell of poo. Dumb patch and author is being a douch modding his patch up.[Quote]

Hah. This patch is incredible. (I didn't get it when just reading the source code, but.... lawl.) Seriously, test the patch.[Quote]

I also think it breaks the spirit of the game. With the same argumentation, you could also confirm stepping into lava, into water, moving adjacent to electric eels, picking up cockatrices, ...
NetHack is so awesome to win because it's so easy to lose. Every little bit you take from the easiness you can lose it will make the success of actually ascending less sweet. So, I don't like that.[Quote]

Wow, awesome! I've died from so many eye/newt combos it's funny and sad at the same time!
Right now I'm working on a patch for NetHack that actually creates a reusable save file because the whole one-shot and you're dead thing really grinds my gears. My dwarven valk was so awesome and I wish I had your eye patch so she wouldn't have died!!1[Quote]

Workmanlike implementation but seriously goes against the spirit of the game. I played it and found my playing to be much sloppier because somehow the RNG is holding my hand.
> You will need to answer the following question correctly: What symbol represents a floating eye? LOL[Quote]

This is an illogical special case, and goes against the spirit of the game.
On the other hand, it does make it a bit less annoying.[Quote]

Makes floating eyes a living, .. floating .., repository of telepathy. One might just as well use interhack or something equally ridiculous.[Quote]

Breaks Stormbringer's bloodthirstyness, and lets the player identify rings of free action and amulets of reflection without consequences, through the presence or absence of a prompt when attacking a floating eye.[Quote] |
