GruntHack is a compilation of many third-party patches and some of the author's own best work.

Third party patches
-------------------
* Astral Escape, by Chi (substantially modified)
* Color Alchemy, by Nephi
* Dark Room, by Clive Crous
* Dump Character, by Jukka Lahtinen
* hpmon, by Ralph Churchill (substanially expanded)
* Grudge, by Nephi
* Menucolors, by Pasi Kallinen
* Sortloot, by Jukka Lahtinen
* use_darkgray, by Michael Deustchmann
* While Helpless, by Pasi Kallinen

Simple mail support for dgamelaunch is also available.

Additional changes from NetHack 3.4.3
-------------------------------------
Interface-related:
* Most areas of the status line acquire colours when an important change
happens, e.g. your attributes turn green if they've just increased
or red if they've decreased.
* In the tty windowing system, areas of the map not in your current line of
sight now take on a darker colour.
* Hallucination causes the entire map to take on strange colours (in tty
GruntHack) and also distorts your perception of items. Fortunately as
it times out its effects are gradually reduced.

Dungeon-related:
* Gehennom has been remodelled - instead of a series of mazes, it is now
a series of caverns complete with rivers of lava and hordes of demons.
* The Gnomish Mines contain pools of water and the occasional river.
* The Elemental Planes appear in random order in the end game.

Player-related:
* Optionally, players can play as a kobold, ogre, or giant, each of which
brings unique problems due to their respective sizes.
* The arbitrary alignment restriction on elves has been removed; they
can now play any alignment (and can play a few new roles as well).
* You can cast monster spells while polymorphed into a spell-casting form.
* Low dexterity causes fumbling on an intermittent basis. Gauntlets of
fumbling and fumble boots set dexterity to 6 as a consequence.
* Wearing greased gauntlets grants "slippery fingers" extrinsically.
* Attempting to abuse the astral call bug causes the gods to take notice.
* Death messages while immobile now reflect the reason for immobility.
* Death messages while stuck in creature form now reflect the method of
death as opposed to plain "stuck in creature form".

Monster-related:
* Some classes of monster can have a race, much as the player does. Some
monsters have been merged as a result. showrace now additionally
shows the race of monsters as well as yourself.
* Shopkeepers that hate your race will charge extra.
* Monsters that polymorph will revert to original form if killed;
their polymorph can also time out.
* Monsters can now use ranged weapons against other monsters, including
polearms and monster spells.
* Monsters can use scrolls of remove curse.
* Intelligent pets will actively seek out better equipment to make use of.
* Monsters can use additional types of equipment that grant magical effects
just as the player can.
* Monsters actively target your pets as well as you.
* The behaviour of covetous monsters has been improved. Most notably those
not capable of teleporting can no longer teleport. If they manage to
acquire their desired target they will attempt to flee effectively.
* Monster displacement is implemented. Shimmering dragons are re-enabled
as a consequence.
* In addition to the shimmering dragons, the vampire mage and vorpal
jabberwock are enabled.
* Kings are now guaranteed to appear in throne rooms.
* Pets will not eat if they are not hungry. Unintelligent pets can choke if
you overfeed them; intelligent pets can keep food with them.
* Gelatinous cubes and water elementals now have an engulfing attack,
making them much more fearsome opponents.
* Puddings have their maximum HP halved when they divide.
* Puddings are now split with edged weapons as opposed to any iron object.
* Messages for monsters missing you are more verbose, explaining what
piece of armour stopped the blow.

Object-related:
* Non-artifact objects can have additional properties (e.g. ___ of fire
resistance).
* Object material is now determined on a per-object basis.
* Foobanes deal additional damaging effects to their targets.
* Hitting monsters with a wielded scroll or wand causes some of the
object's magic to be released. Throwing scrolls has a similar effect.
* Hitting a water elemental with a potion of acid causes the potion
to explode.
* Potions of gain ability and wands now interact plausibly.
* Unidentified fake Amulets of Yendor cannot be put in containers.

This may not be a comprehensive list; the author has put a lot of time into this patch and may have missed some minor details.

So what if I already have menucolors and sortloot installed? It'd seem to get all sorts of error messages from those.

How do I uninstall a patch, anyway?

I'm really excited about this patch and would like to make it work.[Quote]

You can just change the game interface not to give you the information. (i.e. instead of saying "the high priest of [deity] doesn't like being called names", make it "the high priest doesn't like being called names", unless you know his identity from him previously being in your visual range or otherwise interacting with you.)[Quote]

That doesn't explain why you should suffer DEATH for exploiting your telepathy.

How about you just make it a score penalty? The ascension isn't as great, so the score shouldn't be as great, but you should still get to ascend at all.

Otherwise, looks great, I'll be testing it soon.[Quote]

Remember, the penalty for earning the wrath of Moloch, which should be the biggest thing the game's most powerful god can throw at the player, is survivable, and rather easily so if the player knows what he's doing.

It is very Hackish to take advantage of everything a player can think of. To needly penalize him for this will just make the player gun-shy. If there is a definite, LOGICAL reason the player should be killed then killed he should be, but not just because the patch author wants to punish him for behavior he considers to be cheating.

The ettin (giant, whatever) werecreatures should appear much later, if at all. For a level 1 character (protection running) they are a bit too much. Well, for his pet I mean :-)

My pets (and subsequently characters) get killed by them so frequently, it can't be normal. They're like very early soldier ants or something.

Tone them down or make them appear below level 4 only, to keep protection running a possibility. Those creatures start to become not fun.

I have ascended several times, so I'm not being wimpy.[Quote]

Ok, here's how to compile this thing successfully (assuming you got MINGW)
1. Do normal patching steps.
2. Don't compile yet, open up config.h and go down to the fun stuff. Comment out the REGEX thing (MINGW can't handle REGEX stuff).
3. Compile. It'll freeze when it tries to make the custommade icon (eh?). Go to the sys folder, in whatever system you're trying to install it to, and rename nhico.uu to ghico.uu, also, edit the file and change nethack.ico part to grunthack.ico.
3. Continue compiling, and it'll freeze again at the defaults.gh part. Open up your sys folder again, and your OS folder, and rename defaults.nh to defaults.gh. (Another stupid problem.)

Finally, you're done. BTW: there's a bug in sacrificing to gods, the god sends your corpse as an "artifact," after sacrificing (Use my gift wisely! A lichen.)[Quote]

Yup can`t compile it too. Aside from various standard regex errors I get other unfixable errors. Who managed to compile this and how?

I fixed the major REGEX problems, you comment out the something-REGEX part in config.h in the fun stuff section, now the problem is to fix this "major" glitch with compiling... the compiler can't find grunthack.ico... that's a stupid way of not finishing compiling, a custom-made icon.[Quote]

An interesting start. However:
- The penalty for attempting to use the astral call bug, if my understanding and memory of the patch source is correct, is an instadeath. Way, way too arbitrary.
- It would be awesome of the Pet Breath patch were integrated along with the improvements to pet behavior.
- My gut reaction is that polymorphed monsters, if their poly comes from a non-intrinsic souce, probably should not time out.
- Genhennom becoming caverns is not bad, however I don't think mazes should be entirely exiled from the game. Nethack needs more level generation types, not fewer.
- Biodiversity would also be nice to see included (maybe tweaked to remove some of the typical mega-patch excesses).
- You may want to look at Slash'em a bit (just a bit) for inspiration. Not everything in that game is bad. In particular, the optional monster-lair dungeon branches are an idea that deserves wider play. (Nethack needs more branches, if they are interesting, in general.)[Quote]

Quite an achievement.
+ making all those patches work together
+ monster races: great!
+ shopkeeper calling my lawful valk a "scum"
+ water in mines is OK (not more please)
+ the line-of-sight stuff is impressive.
+1 for looks (tty version)
+ gnomish watch captain

Not sure about the changed gehennom yet

- "pair of iron iron boots" has to go
- killing list has "a lord", more exact plz
- "leather high boots" should be "high leather boots"

- german kb patch should be integrated as an option

very impressive work![Quote]
